Cannabis and Older Adults eLearning Modules / Modules d'apprentissage électronique sur le cannabis chez les personnes âgées

CCSMH Logo

Now available! Maintenant offerts!

This series of interactive eLearning modules developed by the Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health (CCSMH) were designed in response to a gap in health care practitioner knowledge regarding cannabis and older adults. An extensive literature review in conjunction with a needs assessment survey distributed by CCSMH informed the content. These modules aim to ensure that healthcare providers have access to up to date evidence-based information regarding cannabis and older adults.

Contact eLearning@baycrest.org for information on how to enroll in this program.

The Memory and Aging Program

Older adults notice changes in their memory such as forgetting the name of someone they know, misplacing their keys or wallet, or forgetting to do things they intended to do.  These memory mistakes can be a source of significant concern and inconvenience.  Many older adults are not clear whether these changes are normal and are therefore looking for practical solutions to help them cope better in their day to day lives.

The Memory and Aging Program is an evidence-based education and intervention program for older adults experiencing normal age-related memory changes.  Through interactive lectures, discussion, and practical exercises participants learn about memory changes that occur with age - what's normal and what's not - and what can be done to improve memory.  Over 1,000 older adults have participated in the face-to-face program at Baycrest.  In the current project we will develop and on-line version of the program.

To date this program has been shown to provide participants with educational value by increasing their "toolbox" of memory skills and strategies while at the same time easing concerns by increasing a sense of normality.  Further, through participation in the program participants have become motivated to make brain-healthy lifestyle choices.  The implementation of an on-line version of the program will increase the flexibility of programming and expand the outreach to a broader audience.

Caring from the Heart

COMING SOON!

The Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care at Baycrest is funded by the Ministry of Long-Term Care. Our mandate is to enhance the quality of care and quality of life for those who live and work in the sector.

Caring from the Heart is a new microcredential available to anyone working in long-term care interested in understanding how to work with an emotion-based approach, particularly with older adults living with dementia.

This training develops readiness skills for the emotional, relational and reflective capacity required to practice person-centred care in a complex, highly stressful environment. It is designed to help you understand what a person living with dementia may be feeling, and how your response can make a difference.

You will learn strategies in communication, mindfulness, presence, reflection and recognizing emotions.

This course was developed with the endorsement and collaboration of the Behavioral Supports Ontario Provincial Coordinating Office, North Bay Regional Health Centre (BSO PCO). BSO PCO provides behavioural health services for older adults in Ontario with, or at risk of, responsive behaviours/personal expressions associated with dementia, mental health, substance use and/or other neurological conditions.

Caring from the Heart is available for free to anyone working in long-term care.
